Description

Prefeasibility study to establish how the Departamento Loreto can best be connected to the national and international transportation network and to investigate whether a road or a railroad project would be more suitable as well as to determine regional and rural development schemes for settlement within the area of influence of the project. Loreto (capital Iquitos) is situated at the upper reaches of the Amazon, yet despite rich mineral reserves and considerable agricultural and forestry potential the area is connected neither by road nor by railroad to the national and international transportation network.

Therefore, corridors for road and railroad had to be identified, with the main emphasis of the assessment and selection initially being placed on transport and economic criteria.
