Description

The project was situated in a heavily built-up part of the city, thus necessitating the underpinning of adjacent buildings by concrete injection, as well as groundwater lowering and the relocation of utility lines.

Furthermore, the entire project had to be carried out without interrupting normal traffic in the area, which amounted to some 100 000 vehicles per day on the beltway itself, in addition to 7 cross-roads, a tram wayline, a bus route, a railway line pedestrians and local residents.

During the project period a new underground railway station was completed beneath the road tunnel and anine-track railway bridge was constructed across the depressed road leading into the road tunnel. The tunnel was constructed using the cut-and-cover method while surface traffic was channelled over the site via elevated auxiliary carriage ways placed on temporary bridges.
